The Isolated ‘Wild Child': Hawthorne's Personification of Romanticism
In The Scarlet Letter a girl is teased, tormented, and omitted. Modern television set viewers may well envision the character Meg via Family Person, who is singled out by her classmates. Even though the writers of Family Man use Meg as a point, Nathaniel Hawthorne uses Pearl to convey romantic ideals. Because of her separation coming from regular contemporary society and her strong connection to nature, Gem symbolizes the aspirational future of Romanticism. Pearl's attributes, such as her self-reliance and her intimacy with nature, might appeal to most Romantics. Her unique character allows Hawthorne to portray Pearl as the light of romanticism within a world of Puritans.
Pearl's individuality characterizes Romantics rather than Puritans. When Mr. Wilson complies with Pearl he asks " what features ailed thy mother to bedizen thee in this strange fashion” and asks in the event she is " a Christian child” or " among those naughty elfs or fairies” (Hawthorne 100). This shows how Pearl's uniqueness irks the puritan minister as they sees that she is not really assimilating to their culture. This ultimately credits to the assertion that Pearl's individualism will go against precisely what is accepted by most Puritans. Because she's different, the Puritans view her since something nasty. They discover her to get " fiend-like, full of smiling malice” when she " dances along, like a small elf” (Hawthorne 89). For this reason, the townspeople believe Treasure to be " a devil offspring” who will " promote some nasty and evil purpose” (Hawthorne 90). Since Pearl's features are unlike those of some other child around, the Puritan townspeople worry that Gem might be the devil incarnate. Their fear of Gem represents their very own dislike of nonconformity and the inability to change.
